![]() ![]() Each of the women’s stories - Nanette, Ursule, Irene, Morwen and Veronica - seem to follow very similar patterns…at least up until the last daughter, Veronica. Therefore, the reader does not experience the entire story within one realm of characters. Louisa Morgan has a beautiful knack for prose and the seeds of a potentially great story.Įach of the main female characters has their own story within the novel. ![]() I found the plot repetitive, a majority of the characters underwhelming and the story itself anti-climatic. Unfortunately, the novel did not live up to my expectations. I selected it as my first fall read, and, quite frankly, the cover is what initially hooked me. As the world evolves and changes, so changes each generation of witch…and so changes the craft. Her female descendents continue practicing the craft, with the magic coming to each woman in unique ways. Beginning in early 19th century in Brittany, the story begins with Grandmére Ursule and her sacrifice for her lineage. Spanning five generations, A Secret History of Witches is a tale of witchcraft that is passed down from mother to daughter through the Orchiére family. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Tooth and claw by jo walton![]() ![]() ![]() You have never read a novel like Tooth and Claw. In which society's high-and-mighty members avail themselves of the privilege of killing and eating the weaker children, which they do with ceremony and relish, growing stronger thereby. Here is a world of politics and train stations, of churchmen and family retainers, of courtship and country houses.in which, on the death of an elder, family members gather to eat the body of the deceased. ![]() 'Robin Hobb'' 'Utterly 'sui generis.'.Its a rare book that leaves me wishing it were twice as long, but 'Tooth and Claw' is one such.'-'The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction ''A delight. Now Walton returns with Tooth and Claw, a very different kind of fantasy story: the tale of a family dealing with the death of their father, of a son who goes to law for his inheritance, a son who agonizes over his father's deathbed confession, a daughter who falls in love, a daughter who becomes involved in the abolition movement, and a daughter sacrificing herself for her husband.Įxcept that everyone in the story is a dragon, red in tooth and claw. Jo Walton writes with an authenticity that never loses heart. Jo Walton burst onto the fantasy scene with The King's Peace, acclaimed by writers as diverse as Poul Anderson, Robin Hobb, and Ken MacLeod. I do have to say I got confused every now and then because I kept forgetting the names of the different creatures and regions and religions. ![]() Then there’s the other characters, Prince Ali and Dara and all the other people in Daevabad…there were so many details to each of them! It was exciting reading something with so much details. She’s brave and empowering, I was inspired by her characters. Nahri is such a strong female lead and I loved every single thing about her. I loved how complicated their storylines are. The magic system works so well with the politics and religions in the book. The magical world is complex and full of mysteries that kept unraveling the more I read. ![]() This book surprised me because of the amount of worldbuilding it had. She’s thrown into a magical world and travels to Daevabad, the city of brass, and discovers her life is more than just the simple life she had grown up in. She never believed in magic, until she accidentally summons a djinn warrior. The City of Brass tells the story of Nahri, a human girl who dreams of becoming a healer. I had not taken the time to write a review about it until now. ![]() I picked up The City of Brass at the beginning of the year. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Wolf Spell by M.R. Polish![]() *Spoiler* I cried when a certain someone died. I love how characters take on their own personalities, and he really did that! I always plan a scene or character, but they tell me how or what they are/do. Davin, (whom you will meet in this book) surprised me by being how he is. ![]() I loved the new characters and enjoyed them immensely. Wolf Dream was absolutely a lot of fun to write. When I start a story, I like to just do it, get it done: write, critiques, edits, betas, edits, format, then publish. Wolf Dream didn't take near as long to release, but I also wasn't under a publisher this time to draw it. It definitely made things interesting, but worked out amazing because they are perfect for each other! (Sorry Jarak fans) In the beginning, I planned it so that Ian was someone who she hates, but when she actually met him, their chemistry made it hard to keep them apart. Soon afterwards I discovered the Russian word for picnic was “piknik” and felt as if I had cracked the Enigma code. I now realise I was probably drawn to The Master and Margarita because its title is virtually the same in Russian as it is in English (“Master i Margarita”) and it gave me a boost that finally I could understand a book title without thinking about it. And that I really wanted to be able to talk to the people for whom this book was everything and to try to understand something about their lives. This book made me realise I was not going to give up.
